A Closer Look at Kim Jong Un Watch Collection

Kim Jong Un Watch

In this blog post, let's talk about the North Korea's enigmatic leader, Kim Jong Un watch collection.

Since ascending to power in 2011, Kim Jong Un has been a figure of global intrigue, known for his distinctive leadership style and unique personal tastes. Among the few glimpses we get into his lifestyle, one aspect that stands out is his choice of watches. Notably, despite his high-profile position and the secretive nature of his regime, Kim Jong Un has been spotted wearing only two different watches. This rarity has piqued the interest of watch enthusiasts and political analysts alike, stirring conversations about his choices.

What intrigues me, and perhaps many others, is the apparent contradiction in Kim Jong Un's actions. He leads a nation known for its isolation from the outside world, yet the watches he wears are not North Korean but from international brands. This paradox raises questions about the image he seeks to project both to his nation and the international community.

Another interesting part is I haven’t seen him wearing a watch from a more luxurious brand such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, etc., considering him a most powerful man in the country. Well, I guess the main reason is that the UN banned the export of luxurious brands to North Korea because of its nuclear project. Okay, I should stop here because this is not the place to talk about politics.

The world of luxury watches is not just about telling time; it often reflects power, taste, and international connections. For world leaders like Kim Jong Un, Joe Biden, King Mswati III, and also former world leaders like Barack Obama, Donald Trump, every detail, including his choice of a wristwatch, can be laden with symbolism, possibly hinting at diplomatic undercurrents or personal preferences that belie the nation's isolated stance.

In this blog post, we delve into the watches that have graced the wrist of North Korea's Supreme Leader. Are these timepieces just personal preferences, or do they carry deeper meanings related to his leadership and North Korea's place in the global arena?

The Movado Museum Black PVD is a timepiece frequently seen on the wrist of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This watch stands out for its distinctive and minimalist design, which at first glance, might give the impression of being a woman's watch due to its sleek and elegant appearance. However, this piece is actually a part of Movado's iconic Museum collection, a line known for its sophisticated and gender-neutral designs.

Originating from the American watchmaker Movado, the Museum design was first introduced in 1947 and has since become a classic in the world of horology. The watch is characterized by its chic black dial, complemented by a gold case, which together create a striking contrast. One of the most notable features of this watch is the single dot at the 12 o’clock position, a hallmark of the Museum line that symbolizes the sun at high noon. This minimalist design element is both artistic and functional, embodying the essence of modernism in watch design.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Movado Museum Black PVD is also notable for its accessibility. Equipped with a quartz movement, it is priced very affordably at around $400. This makes the watch an interesting choice for a world leader, as it contrasts with the typically expensive and exclusive timepieces often favored by figures of such stature. Kim Jong Un's choice to wear this particular watch could be seen as a blend of personal taste and a subtle nod to more practical, accessible luxury.

In May 2022, North Korea faced a significant turning point in its battle against the Covid-19 pandemic. The government implemented a stringent national lockdown following the confirmation of its first official Covid infections. This marked a critical moment for the country, which had previously claimed to be free of the virus. The lockdown was a clear indication of the seriousness of the situation and the government's commitment to controlling the spread of the virus.

During this pivotal period, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un appeared on television, addressing the nation about the new Covid rules and measures. Notably, for what is believed to be the first time, he was seen wearing a face mask. This was a significant visual, as it underscored the gravity of the pandemic and the need for public adherence to health guidelines. Kim Jong-un's decision to wear a mask publicly sent a powerful message to the citizens of North Korea about the importance of following the newly imposed safety protocols.

In addition to the face mask, Kim Jong-un was also spotted wearing a luxurious timepiece - a 40mm IWC Portofino. This watch, notable for its 18k rose gold case, bezel, and markers, along with a silver dial, adds a layer of sophistication to his appearance. The choice of such a high-end and internationally renowned watch brand, especially during a national broadcast focused on a public health crisis, presents an interesting contrast. It reflects not just his personal taste in watches, but perhaps also a subtle message of stability and continued luxury amidst challenging times.
